Have you ever tried salt painting with the kids? If not, you’re in for such a fun and creative treat! I’ve seen these salt painting art projects all over Pinterest and couldn’t wait to try it out myself. Let me tell you, these Salt Paint Snowflakes are the perfect winter kids craft for those cold, windy days when staying cozy inside just feels like the best idea.
There’s nothing better than a sitting around the table on a snowy, cold Saturday afternoon, cozy in your fuzzy socks and sweaters, with a hot cocoa in hand, ready to get crafting with the kids. Honestly, making crafts any day of the week is pretty awesome! But seriously salt painting is so much fun. The kids will be absolutely amazed with this winter art project and how the paint spreads across the salt creating sparkling, frosty designs that look just like real snowflakes.
What I love most about this project is how simple it is to set up but how stunning the results are. All you need are a few basic supplies— watercolor paper, glue salt, and liquid paint— then you’re ready to create your own winter wonderland art project. It’s the perfect indoor activity for those winter days when it’s just too cold to play outside, but you still want something exciting to keep everyone entertained.
You can let the kids draw their own unique snowflakes, or to make things even easier, I’ve created some snowflake templates that you can download and print. Just trace the designs onto your paper, and you’re all set to start crafting.
So, if you’re looking for a creative way to spend a winter afternoon, grab some supplies, round up the kids, and let’s make some sparkling snowy masterpieces together! Trust me, this is one winter craft you’ll want to do again and again!

Salt Paint Snowflakes
What You’ll Need
- card stock or watercolor paper
- white glue
- table salt
- liquid water color paints or food coloring
- paint brush or eye dropper
- pencil
- free small and large snowflake templates and ready made snowflake pages(various sizes)

What To Do
Step 1
Start by downloading and printing the free snowflake template. You can mix and match the different shapes and sizes of snowflakes to create your own unique snowflake design. If you’d prefer something ready to go, I’ve also created five pre-designed snowflake pictures that you can use as-is.

Step 2
Place your template behind a piece of card stock or watercolor paper and hold it up to a window. With your pencil trace the outline of the snowflake.
TIP: For the best results, use the template to trace a thin line onto your watercolor paper. I tried just tracing the glue directly on the template page, but I found the glue lines were too thick making the design look messy. Covering a hand drawn line with the glue makes all the difference and creates a much more beautiful art piece!

Step 3
Once your designs are traced the way you want them, place your paper on a cookie sheet or glass baking dish. This will catch all the salt and keep the mess to a minimum. The next step is to outline the snowflakes with white glue.

Step 4
While the glue is still wet, sprinkle a generous amount of salt over the glue. sprinkle right from the box. Then tip your paper to remove the excess salt. I kept sprinkling salt until I couldn’t see any shiny glue spots.

Step 5
You can either let the glue dry completely before painting, or you can jump right in and start painting right away. I’ve tried both ways and they both work well. Now for the fun part. Mix some food coloring with a bit of water, dip your paintbrush into the mixture, and touch it to the salt covered snowflakes. Watch as the color spreads, creating stunning frosty designs Have the kids experiment with blending colors for unique snowflakes. You could also use liquid watercolor paints for this part.

That was such a fun winter art project? Let me know if you tried this craft with the kids. Be sure to post a picture of your creations in the comment section of my Pinterest pin. I’d love to see how beautiful and unique your Salt Painted Snowflakes turned out!
Until next time
