It’s my absolute favorite time of year—the perfect season for bright, cheerful crafts and fun Easter activities. This Tissue Paper Easter Egg Craft is an easy and mess free alternative to traditional paints and trust me, the kids will love it.
For this Easter craft project we’ll be using bleeding tissue paper –and if you haven’t tried it before, you’re in for a treat. It creates a beautiful water color style effect without the need for messy paints and water cups. I love how every Easter egg turns out unique making it a fun and creative process for kids (and adults—you’ll definitely want to join in!)
This form of artwork gives kids the opportunity for creativity in choosing and blending colors together. All while creating a beautiful art piece to display for your Easter decor. It’s perfect for displaying on the fridge or would be pretty in a frame.
To make things even easier, I’ve created a few Easter Egg templates for you to print out, or the kids can get creative by adding their own designs before applying the tissue paper.

Tissue Paper Easter Egg Craft
What You’ll Need
- bleeding tissue paper
- latex gloves
- water
- mini spray bottle
- paint marker or sharpie
- paper cutter (optional)
- scissors
- free Easter Egg templates: plain Easter Eggs, patterned Easter Eggs

Regular Tissue Paper VS Bleeding Tissue Paper
- Regular Tissue Paper: This is the common tissue paper you find in gift bags, craft stores, and party supplies. It comes in lots of colors, but when you get it wet, it usually doesn’t release its color. Instead, it just wrinkles and tears. While it’s great for decorating, wrapping gifts, and certain craft projects, it won’t work for bleeding tissue paper art because the color stays locked in the paper.
- Bleeding Tissue Paper: This special type of tissue paper is designed to release its dye when it comes into contact with water. When you lay it on paper or another surface, spray or brush it with water, and then let it sit, the colors bleed and blend together, creating a watercolor-like effect. This makes it perfect for bleeding tissue paper art projects like our Tissue Paper Shamrock Craft!
Tip: Not all tissue paper is labeled as “bleeding,” so always check the packaging before buying.
Using bleeding tissue paper adds such a fun and unexpected element to crafting, and the results are always unique. It’s perfect for kids’ crafts, process art, and festive holiday projects like this one!
What To Do
Step 1
Download and print the free Easter Egg templates to get started. choose between a patterned Easter Egg, or plain Easter egg outline. If using the plain eggs you can use the paint pen to create a fun designed background. I will give you examples of both options so you can pick the one that inspires you most.

Step 2
If you’re using the smaller template, cut the page down the middle with a paper cutter.

Step 3
Cut the bleeding tissue into squares, and crumple each square

Step 4
Place your template on a baking sheet for easy clean up. With your mini spray bottle, give the Easter Egg template a mist of water to dampen it.

Step 5
Give your crumpled tissue a spray of water and place on top of the Easter Egg and press down. I wore gloves so my fingers didn’t stain. Since I was using multiple colors, I was sure to leave some white spaces. I just sprayed the tissue paper with water to release a bit more color onto the paper. Repeat these steps with each color you use.

Step 6
For the background, I used different colors, ripping them into various shapes. Spray the background with water, apply the tissue, and spray again once everything is in place. Set aside to dry.

Step 7
Once your picture is dry, remove the tissue to reveal a stunning Easter Egg art project.

Patterned Background
Another fun alternative is to use the plain Easter Egg template but with a black paint pen draw a pattern on the background.

Spray the template and apply the bleeding tissue in the same way as the above instructions.

Wasn’t that a fun Easter craft? I absolutely love how vibrant the colors are! Perfect for spring! Let me know if you tried this craft with the kids.
