Leaf Print Art for Kids
Hello, friends! I hope you’ve had a fantastic weekend. It’s been an unusually cool one here for August, and I can’t help but get a little excited thinking about the crisp, cozy, colorful days of fall that are just around the corner. With that in mind, I’m thrilled to share a craft that’s perfect for celebrating the beauty of the changing seasons—Leaf Print Art for Kids!
These leaf prints are not only a blast to create, but they are also a wonderful way for kids to be creative while having some messy fun with paint. The fun part? Mixing those beautiful fall colors to create leaf prints that are so gorgeous, you’ll want to frame them as part of your autumn decor.
Of course, you can save this activity for when the leaves begin to turn and fall from the trees, capturing the essence of autumn in your artwork through fall paint colors. But summer is also a great time for Leaf Print Art. Take the kids on a nature hike to collect leaves, then come home and create your leaf prints with colorful vibrant colors for summer.
No matter when you choose to recreate this craft, the kids will be amazed at how stunning their artwork turns out. Each leaf turns out a bit different from the other making it a fun surprise when you lift the painted leaf from your paper.
So lets grab some paint, brushes, gather some leaves and start creating some beautiful Leaf Print Art.

Leaf Print Art for Kids
What You’ll Need
- watercolor paper
- watercolor paints
- paint brush
- leaves of various sizes and shapes
- spray bottle
- print roller
- paper towels

What To Do
Step 1
Gather some leaves from a nature walk or your backyard. Be sure to find various sizes and shapes.

Step 2
Lightly mist a sheet of watercolor paper with a spray bottle filled with water, just enough to dampen the surface, then set it aside while you paint your leaf. You don’t want the paper soaked—just a fine spray to get it slightly moist.
I discovered that by gently dampening the paper, the paint adheres more evenly, reducing blotches and minimizing empty spots.

Step 3
With your watercolor paints, brush vibrant fall colors onto the backside of a leaf, exploring different shades and blends as you go. Don’t forget to focus on the back of the leaf—that’s where all the texture and details are, which will give your print a beautifully defined look with lots of texture.

Step 4
Place the painted side of the leaf onto the watercolor paper, then cover it with a paper towel or a sheet of paper. Gently roll over the leaf using a print roller or a craft rolling pin—I used a clay rolling pin for this step.

Step 5
Carefully lift the leaf off the paper to reveal your beautiful leaf print. Repeat these steps with various leaves, adding as many prints as you like until your page is filled with vibrant, unique designs.

How fun was that?! Aren’t these Leaf Prints absolutely beautiful? I hope you give this art project a try. The kids will love creating these leaf prints
Until next time
