Happy Weekend friends! Have you ever experimented with black glue? Oh my goodness, it’s so much fun! Today I’ll show you some black glue art for kids, and a simple tutorial on how to make black glue. It’s super easy and you will love the results.
I was painting some black glue abstract art and completely got carried away and before I realized, hours had passed. It really is therapeutic for me. So, it would be safe to say that this art is not just for kids!
Black glue art is a wonderful way to add a unique twist to your traditional watercolor paintings. The bold lines created by the black glue provide a striking contrast to the soft, flowing colors of the watercolors, resulting in beautiful artwork that truly pops.
I love that the defined, bold outlines made by the black glue create natural boundaries, making it easier to control the watercolor within the designated areas. This can be especially beneficial for kids, helping them develop their painting skills while having fun.
Kids will love the process of designing their own patterns with the black glue, and then filling in the shapes with vibrant watercolors. It’s an activity that not only stimulates their creativity but also improves their fine motor skills and understanding of color blending.
So let’s go have some fun! Grab your supplies and a nice cup of coffee or tea and let’s get crafting!
How To Make Black Glue
First things first! Let’s make some black glue. Creating black glue at home is super simple and only requires two ingredients that you probably already have on hand.
What You Need

What To Do
Step 1
Make sure your glue bottle is half full. If it’s a new bottle, put half into an airtight container to use later, or use a separate squeeze bottle for the black glue.
Step 2
Add your black craft paint to the empty half of the glue bottle. We’re going for an approximate 1:1 ratio. 1 part glue, 1 part black craft paint. It doesn’t have to be exact. Then SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE well to incorporate.

Black Glue Art
Now for the fun part! There are countless black glue art projects that you can create. Today I’ll show you how to make a simple yet stunning abstract watercolor painting using black glue.
Watercolor Abstract Art
What You Need
- black glue
- watercolor paper
- watercolor paint (palette or tubes) I used watercolor tubes for this project
- paint brushes

What To Do
Step 1
Prep your design. This will take some time since the glue has to dry before you paint. Using your black glue, get creative and squeeze out a random, swirly pattern onto the watercolor paper. Allow it dry over night before painting.

Step 2
This is where your creativity will shine! Once the black glue is dry, use your watercolor paints to fill in the pattern you designed. Use single colors or get creative and mix your colors. Whatever you choose will be stunning against the black glue lines!

Watercolor Circle Art
What You Need
- black glue
- watercolor paper
- watercolor paints (palette or tubes) I used a watercolor palette for this project
- paint brushes
- various items to trace circles
- pencil
- circle pattern template (print onto watercolor paper)

What to Do
Step 1
Prep your watercolor paper by tracing various items of different sizes to make circles on your paper. Be sure to overlap some of the circles for added visual interest. If you don’t want to trace your circles, to make things easy for you, I’ve created a circle pattern template that you can print onto the watercolor paper.
NOTE: Check to see if your printer will print on larger paper. Most watercolor paper is 9×12 inches. I had to cut my paper down to regular size to fit in the printer.

Step 2
Using your black glue, outline each of the circles with the glue. Allow to dry overnight.

Step 3
Get creative using your watercolor paints to fill in all the areas of the circles. Use all different colors or just choose three or four favorites.

How fun is that?! Hope you try this Black glue art. I would love to see your creations. Leave me a comment and picture of your artwork under my Pinterest pin.
Have fun painting
Until next time
