Farmhouse Style Headboard

Alright ladies…..SERIOUSLY…..if I can make my own Farmhouse Style Headboard, then YOU can too! A big DIY like this can be a bit intimidating…..especially if it’s your first time making furniture, but it’s really not that difficult and the sense of accomplishment you feel after it’s complete is beyond words!

Do any of you follow Shanty 2 Chic, or Ana White? I’ve followed them on Instagram and Pinterest for a while now and their work inspires me!! It literally makes me want to go out and buy a Kreg Jig and I have no clue how to use it! In fact, my kids asked me for a Christmas list and I included the Kreg Jig on it. 🙂

My girls have always had ‘hand me down’ furniture, so it was definitely time for an update on their room! When I saw the pins my daughter was saving on Pinterest, for her bedroom ideas, and after watching many Shanty 2 Chic videos I thought ‘If these girls can use power tools to make furniture, I can too!’

I have to say, this was a super fun project and I was surprised at how easy it was to put together. The project definitely stirred up another area of my creativity and now I’ll be making more furniture. It’s so rewarding to see the finished product and take pride in knowing that I made it! I used the plans for a single bed from Ana White’s website. My daughter only wanted the headboard, so that made things really easy for our first furniture DIY.

The guys at Home Depot were amazing and cut all my wood into the lengths I needed. I used knotty pine for the bed.  I had a lot of trouble finding 4×4 posts that weren’t treated, for the legs . As an alternative, I ended up gluing 2-2×4’s together to make a post and it worked great!

If you have admired furniture builds on Pinterest but thought ‘I could never do that’……TRY IT! It’s not as difficult as it seems. The hardest part for me was getting over the fear that I was going to make a mistake. Now that I’ve made my first piece of furniture, it will be a breeze to tackle my next project!

For the finish I started with a coat of Minwax Prestain Wood Conditioner. This helps to keep the stain color even. We used Minwax stain in Dark Walnut. My daughter didn’t want the finish too shiny, so I only did 2 coats of a water based Verathane Satin finish.

I absolutely LOVE the way these headboards turned out. Of course, I had to add some cute little fairy lights which are perfect for the girls to use for reading lights.

Now to pick a headboard for my son’s bedroom.

Until next time……Happy DIYing
