Vinegar and Baking Soda Balloon Experiment

Welcome friends! Isn’t science amazing? We absolutely love conducting science experiments around here, and today I’m excited to share with you one of our favorites: the Vinegar and Baking Soda Balloon Experiment.
This experiment is a perfect solution to the daily summer “I’m bored” comments. With a couple simple household ingredients, the kids will be thrilled to learn how to blow up a balloon with vinegar and baking soda. I can hear all the ouuuu’s and ahhhh’s echoing through the house now! And trust me, they will want to do this experiment over and over.

Vinegar and Baking Soda Balloon Experiment
What You’ll Need
- empty water bottles OR soda bottles (we used a 750ml soda bottle)
- vinegar
- baking soda
- balloons
- funnel

What To Do
Step 1
Fill your water bottle about 1/3 full of vinegar

Step 2
With a funnel fill almost half the balloon with baking soda (we found that 1 heaping tablespoon was enough), then stretch the balloon over the mouth of the water bottle ensuring not to drop any baking soda in the vinegar at this point.
NOTE: I originally had about 2 tablespoons of baking soda in the first balloon we did and the vinegar and baking soda solution bubbled up into the balloon causing the balloon not to stand up straight as it was rising. (See the pink balloon in the photos). The green balloon was done with only 1 tablespoon of baking soda and worked perfectly.

Step 3
Lift the balloon to dump the baking soda into the vinegar, then watch the science happen!

Let’s break down the science behind the Vinegar and Baking Soda Balloon Experiment and learn why the vinegar and baking soda inflates the balloon
When you mix vinegar and baking soda, something really cool happens. These two ingredients create a chemical reaction. But what is a chemical reaction? It’s like magic where two things mix together and make something new!
– Vinegar is an acid. Acids are substances that can react with bases.
– Baking soda is a base. Bases can react with acids to create new things.
When vinegar and baking soda come together, they react and produce carbon dioxide gas. This gas is the same kind you find in fizzy drinks that make them bubble.
Here’s what happens in the experiment:
– Mix: When you mix the baking soda into the vinegar, they start reacting right away.
– Chemical Reaction: The vinegar (acid) and baking soda (base) create carbon dioxide gas.
– Inflate: The carbon dioxide gas rises and fills the balloon, causing it to inflate.
The magic of this experiment is in the carbon dioxide gas. As the reaction happens, this gas needs space to expand, and the balloon provides that space. As more gas is produced, the balloon gets bigger and bigger.
This experiment is a great way to see a chemical reaction in action using everyday items. It’s a fun and educational way to learn about chemical reactions and gases!
