Hey there friends. As Father’s Day approaches , there’s no better way for the kids to show their love and appreciation for dad than with a homemade gift. I mean, isn’t that what Father’s Day is all about?…..all the kids showering dad with their handmade creations! Today, I’ve got the perfect easy Father’s Day craft to do with the kids, , Shrinky Dink Keychains. And not just any ordinary keychain, we’re going to turn your kids artwork into a cute keychain that dad will cherish forever.

If you’re not familiar with the wonders of Shrinky Dinks, trust me your kids will love making these. I remember making Shrinky dink Christmas ornaments with a Sunday school class years ago. And yes I still have that ornament!

What Are Shrinky Dinks?

Shrinky Dinks are literally decorated sheets of plastic that shrink and harden when placed in the oven. They can be made into keychains, ornaments, jewelry and more.

This is one of those crafts that made me stop and think, ‘who discovered this’? It’s genius and so fun to make! So what do I do when I have these questions? I google it! And here’s the story, incase you were wondering.

Apparently, in 1973 two moms from Michigan created the craft as a project with their sons for Club Scouts. They had read that you could make charms from coloring and baking throw away plastic lids. They were hesitant to try for fear of ‘burning the house down’, but it worked! And the rest is history! I’m so glad they tried, because this is such a fun and easy kids craft to do! You’ll be hearing lots of “ouuuu’s and ahhhh”s” when they watch the plastic shrink….it’s so cool!

If you’re looking for another adorable Father’s Day gift idea that your kids can make, check out my DIY Sock Bouquet post for a fun and imaginative twist on gifting Dad socks. Plus, I’ve included a complimentary printable Father’s Day gift tag to complete the presentation!

There are only a few supplies you’ll need for this kids craft, so let’s get into the tutorial.

What You’ll Need

WHAT TO DO

Step 1

Start by prepping your Shrinky Dink plastic sheets. Since the plastic shrinks over fifty percent, I found the perfect size to cut your plastic is 6½ inch x 4½ inch. (this gave us a finished size of 2½ inch x 1¾ inch) You can definitely cut them any size you would like though. I cut a sheet of white paper to the 6½ inch x 4½ inch size and taped it to the plastic, to use as a guide for cutting the plastic.

Step 2

Using the Sharpie permanent markers, let your kids create their artwork on the plastic film. Permanent markers are the best choice for coloring Shrinky Dinks. Kids washable markers will not work. Just a note…..whatever colors you use will get much darker when baked.

Step 3

Punch a hole in the corner of each plastic film for the key chain. Depending on which style of keychain you’re using, you may need to cut the hole a bit larger since the plastic will shrink considerably.

Step 4

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place the Shrinky Dinks on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake for two minutes. (Of course, read the directions on the package of shrink film you buy….but ours said bake for two minutes) Then watch the magic happen!

Step 5

Use a spatula to press the Shrinky Dink flat as soon as it comes out of the oven. It’s important to do this while the Shrinky Dink is still hot. This will ensure that all the edges will lay flat.

Step 6

Loop your keychain through the hole you made in the Shrinky Dink and secure.
