Magic Paper Towel Art
What You’ll Need
- paper towel sheet
- washable markers
- Sharpie permanent marker
- baking dish
- parchment paper (optional)
- spray bottle for water

What To Do
Step 1
Place a paper towel sheet into a glass baking dish or some sort of shallow dish. This is to protect the surface you’re working on from marker bleeding through. I also folded a sheet of parchment paper to place underneath the paper towel. (The first time I tried this, the Sharpie marker bled through onto my baking dish, which washed up with no problem. So this step is completely optional)
Once you’re all set up, have your children begin drawing hearts with colorful washable markers all over the paper towel sheet.

Step 2
With your black Sharpie permanent marker, trace over top of the colored hearts to cover them as much as possible.

Step 3
Fill a spray bottle with water and begin spraying each heart on the paper towel. Watch in amazement as the watercolor marker underneath bleeds through to create a beautiful Valentine art project.

The Science Behind The Experiment
The science behind Magic Paper Towel Art is all about how water moves and interacts with the markers!
- Water Absorption: Paper towels are made of tiny fibers that soak up water, similar to a sponge. This is what allows the water to spread across the surface.
- Color Movement: Washable markers are water-based, so when water touches the ink, it dissolves and spreads with the water.
- Blending Colors: As the water moves, it carries the marker ink with it, causing the colors to mix and blend into vibrant patterns.
- Permanent Marker Lines: Permanent markers don’t dissolve in water because they’re made with non-water-based ink, so your outlines stay in place while the washable colors move.
It’s a simple but fascinating way to show kids how water interacts with different materials!
How fun is this Magic Paper Towel Art! What a great Valentine’s Art Project for kids! I hope you enjoy making these as much as I did! I would absolutely love to see your creations.
