Magic Milk Experiment

Hey there friends! Hope you’re having a fantastic weekend full of lots of sunshine and fun! I’m thrilled to share with you a super fun science experiment for kids. Summer is the perfect time to get the kids exploring the world of science, especially on those rainy days where they’re stuck inside and bored. This Magic Milk Experiment is anything but boring!
If you’ve never heard of the Magic Milk Experiment, you’re in for a treat. It’s an incredibly simple yet exciting activity where you get to see vibrant colors dance and swirl in milk. It’s like watching a mini kaleidoscope right on your kitchen table. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to introduce a bit of science to the kiddos—or just have some fun yourself! I’m all about simple and fun!
So lets gather our supplies and have some fun learning about science. You’ll be amazed at how easy this experiment is to put together.

Magic Milk Experiment
What You’ll Need
- pie plate
- whole milk (we used 3.25%)
- liquid food coloring (we used Neon colors)
- dish soap
- cotton swabs (optional)

What To Do
Step 1
Pour about 1 cup of milk into the pie plate. Just enough to cover the bottom of the plate.

Step 2
Add several drops of food coloring around the center of the plate. Use as many colors as you would like. We tried different variations, some with four colors, some with two colors.

Step 3
For younger children, pour some dish soap into a small container. Dip a cotton swab into the dish soap, then touch one of the food coloring drops with the dish soap and watch the magic happen.
You could also drop one drop of dish soap directly onto the food coloring right from the bottle.


Our Insights
– be sure to use liquid food coloring, NOT gel. The best is the kind in the grocery store. Be sure it’s a Brand Name. We tried the generic Walmart brand food coloring and it didn’t work. It’s probably best to stick with a brand name product.
– we found there was a much better reaction by dropping the dish soap onto the food coloring right from the bottle instead of using a cotton swab.


The Science Behind the Experiment
The Magic Milk Experiment is a fascinating way to show how different molecules interact with each other.
How it Works
– Milk Composition: Milk is composed of water, fat, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. The fat and protein molecules are the key players in this experiment.
– Food Coloring: When you add drops of food coloring to the milk, they stay relatively stationary on the surface because the surface tension of the milk holds them in place.
– Dish Soap: This is where the magic happens! Dish soap is designed to break down fat and grease. When you touch a cotton swab dipped in dish soap to the milk, the soap reduces the surface tension and begins to interact with the fat molecules in the milk.
– Molecular Movement: As the soap molecules spread out and bond with the fat molecules in the milk, they create movement. This movement pushes the food coloring around, causing the colors to swirl and mix in beautiful patterns.
– Chemical Reaction: The soap molecules have one end that is hydrophobic (repels water) and another end that is hydrophilic (attracts water). When the soap is introduced to the milk, the hydrophobic ends attach to the fat molecules while the hydrophilic ends remain in the water. This creates a push and pull effect that causes the colors to move in all directions.
So, when you do the Magic Milk Experiment, you’re seeing the soap break up the fat in the milk, making the colors dance and swirl. It’s a fun way to learn about how different things mix together!
